In
1966, Sister Juliaan Mullie, icm, a Belgian nun, founded SAFFY
or Social Action for Filipino Youth, carried by its vocational
thrust “Fight Hunger Through Work,”
to create alternative sources of livelihood for the
unemployed and out of school youth in the marginalized areas of
Manila.
From social enterprise, SAFFY expanded to social services
to serve communities in need by launching social development
programs.
Working on a bigger scope, the organization was legally
incorporated in 1970 as Social Action Foundation For Rural and
Urban Development, Inc. or SAFRUDI, retaining
SAFFY as its trade name for its export items in
remembrance of its humble beginnings.
In 2000, SAFRUDI ventured in the domestic market by
introducing product lines under the trade name,
ManoMano (a Spanish term for “handmade”).
It came as an initiative to sustain the livelihood
of more producers and artisans, and to advocate the fair
trade principle locally.
