Sr.
Juliaan (Maria) Mullie, icm
(1914-2001)
Maria Mullie
was born in Brugge, West Vlaandren, Belgium, on August 17,
1914. Her father Julien, an engineer, died when she was only
eight. Young Maria, a brother and a sister (who was also an ICM
nun, Sr. Paula), were left to the care of their mother, Anna
Scharlaeken. She finished elementary and secondary education in
Hemelsdale, Brugge, in 1926, and in St. Lugardis, Antwerpen, in
1931, respectively.
Her religious
life began in 1936 with her entrance in the formation house in
Heverlee, and became a novice that same year.
Shortly after professing her First Commitment to the
religious life in 1938 and given a new name as Sr. Juliaan, she
was sent as a missionary to the Philippines.

Sr. Juliaan arrived in the Philippines on board the ship
S/S Potsdam on December 27 1938.
Here, she renewed her Commitment, had her Final Commitment,
and celebrated both her Silver and Golden Jubilees.
While doing her
first assignment at St. Teresa’s College in Manila, she gained her
degree in Education Major in Social Sciences, Minor in Modern
Languages from St. Teresa’s College in 1942.
For fourteen years, Sr. Juliaan was an educator.
She taught at schools in San Fernando in La Union, Baguio
City and Manila.
Through a
request of the Apostolic Nuncio, she led the youth organization,
Young Christian Workers (YCW) from 1952-1967.
In 1966, at about the time she was to end her term at YCW,
she founded SAFFY or Social Action For Filipino Youth, a self-help
organization that provided livelihood opportunities to
out-of-school youth in marginalized areas of Manila.
Its expanding trading and social activities led to its
incorporation as SAFRUDI or Social Action Foundation for Rural and
Urban Development, Inc.
Sr. Juliaan led SAFRUDI’s successful operations from 1970 to 1994.
Sr. Juliaan
returned to Belgium on May 25, 1994 to retire at Heverlee where
she died on November 26, 2001.
